DMSO Exposed: Is It Safe for Your Pets?
“Don’t use this,” they said. I was taught to never use DMSO because it was labeled ‘unproven’ or ‘quackish.’
Turns out, that’s not entirely true. I’ve found DMSO to be incredibly helpful—not just for my pets, but for myself too!

What Is DMSO Anyway?
DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, is derived from pine trees as a byproduct of the paper industry. It was first isolated in the mid-1800s by a Russian chemist. Fun fact—it’s also naturally found in garlic as one of the root’s 70+ sulfur compounds.
What Can DMSO Do?
DMSO is one of the most versatile therapies I’ve seen. It can be administered orally, topically, and via injection—both into the vein and the muscle. Thousands of studies support its anti-inflammatory and healing properties, showing promise for a wide range of conditions.
Arthritis
DMSO penetrates deep into tissues, reducing pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and possibly even gout.
Strains and Sprains
Applied topically, DMSO works fast to reduce swelling and pain, improving mobility almost immediately.
Drug Extravasation Injury
When medications leak into surrounding tissue, the damage can be severe. DMSO has been shown to significantly improve tissue injury caused by extravasation.
Herpes and Cat Flu
DMSO can enhance the penetration of alpha-interferon ointment, which may benefit cats with Cat Flu caused by herpes virus.
Wound Healing
DMSO can speed up healing by increasing blood flow and promoting tissue repair.
Bladder Inflammation
For cats with cystitis or dogs with similar issues, topical DMSO over the bladder can bring welcome relief.
Eye Conditions
DMSO can act as a delivery agent for medications, helping manage certain eye conditions.
How I Use DMSO
Here’s my personal routine for safe and effective use:
-
Get the Right Product
Use pharmaceutical-grade DMSO—at least 99% pure. Avoid added fragrances or other ingredients. -
Protect Your Hands
Wear gloves or wash thoroughly after applying. I don’t worry too much about minor absorption when applying it topically to my pets. -
Application
I apply DMSO directly over inflamed joints. For example, Tula had a painful knee—first I applied topical CBD, then DMSO to carry the CBD into the joint. I do the same for my injuries from biking or soccer: topical CBD first, then DMSO. For wounds, I change dressings regularly, applying DMSO and then a clean dressing. -
Dosage
1ml per 10 lbs of body weight, three times per day, directly over the affected area.
Heal Your Pet at Home
I’ve been using DMSO regularly for both myself and Tula. The results? Holistic pain relief, reduced inflammation, and improved mobility.
If you want to explore natural ways to help your pet feel better, DMSO is worth considering.
