Today, I’m going to tell you about my cat Marie, who has been winking at me recently. No, it’s not because she’s trying to be cute—there’s actually a reason behind it. Let me explain!

What’s Going on with Marie’s Eye?

Marie’s left eye was partly open, which caught my attention. Initially, I was concerned, but after a thorough check, I realized the issue wasn’t as serious as I first thought. I took her into the light to get a better look at her eye and observed the cornea closely. Thankfully, it looked clear, with no signs of any foreign objects, whiteness, or other abnormalities, so I was relieved.

Understanding the Eye Anatomy

The cornea is the clear, central part of the eye, and it appeared fine. However, the conjunctiva, the pink tissue that covers the eye and provides lubrication and protection, was slightly more pink than usual and a bit swollen. This tissue should normally have a light pink color, but when it becomes irritated, it can turn darker and swell. This is what happened to Marie, and the condition she has is called conjunctivitis, or pink eye.

How to Treat Conjunctivitis at Home

Luckily, conjunctivitis can be treated with some simple home remedies. Here’s what I did for Marie:

1. Black Tea Compress

A simple but effective treatment for eye irritation is a black tea compress. I used Earl Grey tea for this, but any black tea will work. Here’s the process:

  • Steep one tea bag in half a cup of hot water for 10 minutes.

  • Let the tea cool down to a comfortable temperature.

  • Once cooled, use the tea to treat Marie’s eye.

To apply the treatment, I gently pulled down the lower lid and put 3-4 drops of the cooled tea into her affected eye, four times a day for five days. This helps soothe the irritation and reduce inflammation.

2. Honey Eye Drops

Another great remedy for eye infections is honey. Honey has natural antibacterial properties and can be used to make eye drops. Here’s how I made them:

  • Take 1 teaspoon of honey and dissolve it in half a cup of warm water.

  • Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before applying it to the eye.

  • Just like with the tea, use 3-4 drops in the affected eye four times a day.

Both the honey and tea should be made fresh daily to ensure they’re effective.

3. L-Lysine Supplement for Viral Infections

For many cats with recurrent eye infections, the underlying cause is often feline viral rhinotracheitis, a type of herpes virus. In these cases, supplementing with L-Lysine can help put the virus into remission, allowing the immune system to manage the infection more effectively.

In my Ultimate Feline Health Formula, each scoop contains 100mg of L-Lysine. The recommended dosage for L-Lysine is 100mg per day, and it should be given for a minimum of eight weeks—preferably twelve weeks—to see noticeable results.

Marie’s Recovery

Marie has been responding well to these treatments, and I’m confident she’ll recover soon. It’s always important to monitor your pet’s symptoms and take the necessary steps to treat them early.

  1. Would i use either tea or honey home remedy solutions, or would it be use both together? Also you said to make it fresh each day, could I make one batch daily to use/dose for the four times daily dose?
