Best Dog Food Allergy Test

Dr. Jones discusses the most common signs of Food Allergies in Dogs, and the BEST Food Allergy Test for Dogs. Dr. Jones also shows you an effective Dog Food Recipe that you can make at home.

The most common signs of a dog with allergies is intense, non-seasonal itching. You’ll notice face scratching, they will be chronically licking their paws, and they will have recurring ear infections.

Diagnostic tests for food allergies aren’t the most reliable. Most dogs with allergies are from protein – beef, chicken, eggs and dairy.

To start, you’ll start an elimination diet, here is my recipe:

  • 1-1/2 tbsp Sunflower oil (fat)
  • 1lb Ground Turkey (protein)
  • 1/2 cup Kale (veggie)
  • 1 cup brown rice (carbohydrate)

Start cooking the brown rice (1 cup rice to 2 cups water). In a pan, add 1/2 tbsp. oil and ground turkey and sauté until cooked. Add in the kale, and add this mixture to a bowl – this will end up being about 2 cups of food. Add brown rice (comes out to about 4 cups of rice) to the bowl. Add 1 tbsp. sunflower oil per 1lb of meat.

Tula, a 20lb dog will be fed 1 cup of this mixture 2 times per day, so about 2 cups per 20lbs. You can make this in large batches and freeze to make this easier for you.

The one meal should be ALL they eat for a period of 8 weeks, including treats (you can use ground turkey for treats).

It’s important to commit to this 2 months of time before ruling out if they have an allergy. Don’t be too concerned about feeding them a super balanced diet.

  1. Hi Doc
I was wondering if I doing right making my own dog food. I get ground turkey, chicken, mixed vegetables, some times chunks of cooked potatoes. Cook it all together. Thanks for reading this.

  2. Looking for a good dry dog food for a 10 pound poodle and a 7 lb poodle. I am currently using a brand called Liberty…. It is grain free lamb. I feed them boiled chicken breast and add organic pumpkin purée. Please help with a good dry kibble for in between. Sincerely Linda

    1. For your 10-lb and 7-lb poodles, a limited ingredient dry food with a novel protein is best to help avoid allergies. Options like Wellness Simple (Lamb & Oatmeal), Natural Balance LID (Salmon & Sweet Potato), or Merrick Limited Ingredient Salmon are good choices, as they use fewer ingredients and include omega-3s to support skin and reduce itching.
