Purina Says it’s Pet Food is Safe: Social Media Says Otherwise

Purina Responds to Online Rumors About Pet Food Safety

Purina has been actively refuting online rumors questioning the safety of their pet food. Amidst this controversy, I’m hosting a brand new webinar titled “Are You Feeding Your Dog Right? Discover the Truth About Dog Nutrition." This event is set for Tuesday, January 23rd, at 5 p.m. Pacific, and you’re warmly invited to join by signing up through the link provided.

Social Media Outcry Over Purina Products

Numerous social media accounts, particularly on TikTok and Facebook groups like Saving Pets One at a Time, have alleged that Purina’s Pro Plan and other products have severely affected the health of numerous dogs and cats. These posts, filled with distressing accounts of seizures, diarrhea, vomiting, and even deaths, have sparked widespread concern among pet owners.

Purina’s Firm Denial and Assurance

In response to the alarming claims, Purina, backed by its parent company Nestle, has staunchly denied any link between their products and the reported health issues. They emphasize that their quality assurance team has found no evidence or trend to support these allegations. Furthermore, Purina reassures pet owners that no current FDA recalls are affecting their products, with the last recall dating back to March 2023 for a specific Pro Plan Veterinary Diet due to elevated levels of vitamin D.

A Pet Owner’s Heartbreaking Narrative

James Deal, a pet owner from Long Island, New York, shares a harrowing story. He had four dogs, three of which consumed Purina’s Pro Plan. His 14-year-old Rottweiler, after eating Pro Plan, suffered from vomiting and diarrhea and tragically passed away the following month. His other dogs displayed similar symptoms, with one in critical care. Interestingly, his fourth dog, not on the Purina diet, remained healthy. Mr. Deal suspects the food to be the culprit, a suspicion that grew after discovering similar stories online.

Alarming Statistics from a Facebook Group

The Facebook group Saving Pets One at a Time reports distressing figures: since December 5th, 2023, 940 pets have reportedly fallen ill after consuming Purina products, with 229 fatalities. These cases span across six countries, suggesting a potentially broader issue. The group, backed by nine holistic veterinarians, also points to other brands that might be affected due to shared vitamin and mineral premix suppliers.

Advice for Concerned Pet Owners

For those feeding their pets Purina or other listed brands, the group advises an immediate halt. They recommend watching for symptoms like lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, and seizures. In case of such signs, seeking veterinary care, stopping the use of the questionable food, reporting to the FDA, and retaining a sample of the food for independent testing are strongly suggested.

Personal Stance and Call to Action

After reviewing all the information and personal accounts, my advice is clear: avoid Purina products and other listed brands. The sheer volume of reports suggests this is more than a mere coincidence. Personally, I’m switching my dog’s diet from Acana, one of the listed brands, and will keep you updated on further developments. Your pet’s safety is paramount, and staying informed is crucial.

  1. Dr. Jones,

My vet recommended a new arthritis injection called Librella for my 12 year old miniature schnauzer with arthritis pain. I am wondering what your opinion is on this and whether or not you would recommend it. Thank you!

  2. What is a good quality wet cat food that you can recommend because my senior cat is having diarrhea and is weak just not himself and I believe it’s due to Friskies wet cat food that he’s been eating because I was unaware of the big problem with Purina brand.. any help is greatly appreciated thanks so much …Dr. Jones
