Hello fellow readers.

Today’s posting is a small mystery….you tell me what you think.

A dog named Gus came in to the clinic with some unusual signs.

He had a small hole in the left side of his chest, a small hole in the right side,
plus a small hole and bump palpable inside the right elbow.

Gus lives in the country, and has a history of visiting the neighbors compost.

Apparently the neighbor isn’t so fond of Gus.

Gus’s owners found him Saturday night with a small amount of blood on both sides of his chest, and inside his elbow.

Gus was also coughing occasionally.

On physical exam he had a normal TPR, but these unexplained holes.

I was able to take X-rays.

The X-rays led to surgery.

Attached are 2 pictures- one of the X-ray, and one of Gus after surgery.

What do you think happened to Gus?

  1. Gus received a bullet(not the mortal ones, I don??t remember the name in english but it??s the kind of bullet that children receive when playing with “toy” guns. In Chile we call them “Poston”)

  2. Hi Andrew,

Interesting question to say the least. Having holes on either side, makes this even harder to determine. My guess is that he was shot with a slug gun (thats what we call them here in OZ), then turned around quickly and was shot in the inner leg area whilst turning, and another in the other side once completely turned around.
I imagine all of this took less than 2 seconds to occur.
Following this unfriendly and painful experience, I have no doubt he bolted home with all the energy the poor baby could muster. I look forward to learning the “real cause” for his injuries.

    sincerely,
    Janne

  3. Poor Gus. His neighbors should be turned in to the police for animal cruelty. It sounds like he got shot. I pray Gus continues to heal.
