Stop Using This OTC Medicine for Dog Coughing: A new, Safe and Effective Natural Option

A Safer Natural Remedy for Dog Coughing

If your dog is coughing, I know how tempting it is to reach for an over-the-counter cough syrup.

In fact, for years, many pet parents were told to go to the pharmacy and pick up a cough syrup containing dextromethorphan.

But here is the problem.

It is not always very effective, it tastes awful, and it can cause side effects in dogs.

So instead of reaching for that bottle first, I want to show you a safer, natural option that can help soothe your dog’s throat and calm the cough.

What may also help dogs and cats with coughing is CBD, especially when the cough is tied to airway inflammation, irritation, or anxiety.

Research in animal asthma models has shown that CBD may help reduce inflammatory cytokines involved in airway disease, and another study found CBD reduced airway inflammation and fibrosis in experimental allergic asthma. It is not a replacement for a proper diagnosis, especially if your pet has heart disease, pneumonia, or serious breathing difficulty, but it can be a helpful adjunct for dogs and cats with inflammatory coughs, tracheal irritation, chronic bronchitis, or cough-related stress. Dr. Jones’ Ultimate CBD Formula for Dogs and Cats is a full-spectrum CBD supplement in 100% organic cold-pressed hemp oil, available in liquid form for accurate dosing.

Why I Avoid OTC Cough Syrup for Dogs

Dogs cough for many different reasons.

It may be:

  • Kennel cough
  • Tracheal collapse
  • Bronchitis
  • Throat irritation
  • Heart-related coughing

That is why the cause matters.

But many people still reach for OTC cough syrup. The most common active ingredient is dextromethorphan.

The issue is that it can cause side effects, including:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sleepiness
  • Drooling
  • Anxiety
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Poor coordination
  • Muscle tremors
  • Collapse
  • Seizures

That is not something I want to casually give to a coughing dog when there are safer options.

My Favorite Natural Cough Remedy

One of the most studied and useful natural remedies for coughing is simple:

Honey and lemon

It is inexpensive, easy to make, and most dogs tolerate it well.

Honey is one of my favorite cough remedies because it naturally coats and soothes the throat. It also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Lemon juice adds vitamin C, which gives antioxidant support and may help the immune system respond to infection.

This is exactly what I want when a dog has an irritated throat from coughing.

Honey and Lemon Cough Remedy for Dogs

Here is the simple recipe I would use for a 20 pound dog like Tula.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon natural honey
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix the honey into the warm water until dissolved. Then add the lemon juice.

How to Give It

For a 20 pound dog, give the mixture throughout the day.

I would divide it into 3 to 4 servings.

You can offer it in a bowl first. Some dogs will drink it on their own.

If not, use a syringe and gently give small amounts into the side of the mouth.

You can use this for 5 to 10 days, or as needed for coughing episodes.

When This Remedy May Help

This can be especially useful for mild coughing caused by:

  • Kennel cough
  • Throat irritation
  • Tracheal irritation
  • Mild upper respiratory infections

For chronic conditions like tracheal collapse, this may help soothe flare-ups.

When to See Your Veterinarian

Do not ignore a cough that is severe or ongoing.

See your veterinarian if your dog has:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Blue or pale gums
  • Severe lethargy
  • Coughing that persists
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Known heart disease
  • Coughing that worsens at night

A cough is a symptom. The important thing is figuring out why it is happening.

Final Thoughts

If your dog is coughing, think twice before reaching for OTC cough syrup.

Dextromethorphan can have side effects, and in many cases, it is not my first choice.

A simple honey and lemon remedy can soothe the throat, support the immune system, and help calm the cough naturally.

Simple. Safe. Effective.
