Keto Diet for Dogs: Should You Consider It?

You might have heard about the keto diet for humans—low carb, high fat, moderate protein—and it’s become quite the trend. But is this something that could be good for your dog too? Let’s dive into what a ketogenic diet could mean for your pet, and how you can make it at home.

What is a Ketogenic Diet?

A ketogenic diet for dogs is designed to be high in fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates. This is important because healthy cells in the body can either use glucose (from carbohydrates) or fat for energy. The keto diet encourages the body to use fat as its primary fuel source, a process known as ketosis. Now, ketosis isn’t just some diet trend—it’s a natural process. Imagine your dog out in the wild, going days without food. His body would start mobilizing fat stores, producing ketones, and using those for energy.

This same process can benefit your dog in more ways than one.

Health Benefits of a Keto Diet for Dogs

  1. Seizures – Some dogs, especially those with epilepsy, have difficulty controlling their seizures. The ketogenic diet has shown promise in helping these dogs.

  2. Diabetes – If your dog has diabetes and it’s difficult to manage with traditional treatments, a keto diet may offer better control of blood sugar levels.

  3. Cancer – Cancer cells love sugar (glucose) and use it as their main energy source. On a ketogenic diet, your dog’s body produces ketones instead, and cancer cells have a harder time growing.

A Case Study: How a Keto Diet Helped an Epileptic Dog

In 2019, a case study demonstrated just how beneficial a ketogenic diet could be for dogs with epilepsy. The dog, a 12-year-old with severe epilepsy, had stopped responding to traditional medications like phenobarbital and potassium bromide. In this case, the owners made a homemade keto diet, and the results were amazing. The dog went for 33 weeks without having a seizure—something they hadn’t experienced in years!

The Keto Diet Recipe for Dogs

The homemade keto diet in the study was simple. It included:

  • 17 grams of cooked fatty lamb – Lamb is an excellent source of fat and protein.

  • 1 tablespoon of canned pumpkin – Full of fiber and vitamins.

  • 1 teaspoon of MCT oil – MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil is essential for providing a quick source of energy and supporting ketosis.

  • Canine vitamins and minerals – A supplement to ensure your dog gets all the essential nutrients.

For smaller dogs like Tula (about 5 pounds), this diet worked great. For a larger dog (like a 20-25 pound dog), you’d need to adjust the amount of food accordingly. For example, you’d need about half a pound of food for every 50 pounds of body weight. The key here is the fatty lamb and MCT oil, which provide the necessary calories to keep your dog’s body in a state of ketosis.

The Results

One of the most remarkable aspects of this case study was the dog’s drastic improvement. After starting the ketogenic diet, the dog had no seizures for 33 weeks, even while still on phenobarbital. This was huge, as they had previously stopped responding to the medication. If your dog suffers from seizures, diabetes, or even cancer, a ketogenic diet could make a noticeable difference.

Should You Try It?

If you have a dog with epilepsy, diabetes, or cancer, the ketogenic diet is certainly worth considering. It’s a simple and effective approach that can offer serious health benefits. Whether you decide to make the food yourself or consult your vet about commercial options, a keto diet could help your dog live a happier, healthier life.

  1. Are the amounts in this Keto Diet Recipe the amount for one full day or is this doubled for a whole day?

My dog is 44 lbs. Tula (20-251lbs) gets 17gm x 4 = 68 gms of meat. Would I use 136 gm of fatty lamb (17 x 8 = 136 gm)? If I increase the amount of fatty lamb eight times, would I also increase the amount of pumpkin, MCT Oil, and Ultimate Canine Advanced vitamin/mineral supplement eight times?

Also, could I use fatty ground beef instead of fatty lamb?

    1. The amounts in the Keto Diet Recipe are intended for one full day. If your dog weighs 44 lbs, you can adjust the recipe accordingly. For example, if the recipe suggests 17 grams of meat per pound of body weight, you would calculate:

      17 grams × 44 lbs = 748 grams of meat per day.

If you plan to use fatty lamb, you would use 748 grams of it. You can also substitute fatty ground beef for lamb, ensuring it meets the fat content requirements.

Regarding other ingredients like pumpkin, MCT oil, and the Ultimate Canine Advanced supplement, it’s essential to adjust their quantities proportionally to maintain the correct nutritional balance. For instance, if you’re increasing the meat amount, you would also increase these ingredients accordingly.
