Cancer can be prevented with…?
Good morning fellow pet guardians…
I just read in the news this morning about a young Canadian Musician who died at the age of 41 from Cancer, Jeff Healey. Even more amazing is that he was blind from a rare form of eye cancer at the age of 1.
He taught himself to play guitar with the guitar laying on his lap. He was an incredible guitar player, who I saw in Concert at a local Jazz Festival – the Kaslo Jazz Festival.
I just happen to be 41 – Cancer can affect any of us at any age. Including our pets.
Just because your pet isn’t a senior, it doesn’t mean that he/she WON’T be affected by it.
SO WHAT can you do?
Here are some KEY POINTS from my membership site:
Cancer Prevention
What is Your Pet Eating?
This is the most important thing that you can do to prevent cancer in your pet! When the body is supported with the building blocks needed to maintain healthy cells and repair damaged ones, healing from within can begin.
It is best to feed a premium quality holistic diet – avoid artificial colors. Ensure that a natural preservative is used. Some dogs thrive on a raw food diet; if you take the proper precautions, then this is a great option.
Cancer cells thrive on carbohydrates and proteins, but can’t grow as fast with fats. Certain veterinary diets have been designed for this, but you can also make your own low-carbohydrate, high-fat cancer diet.
Simple Cancer Diet
50% chicken/fish
50% mixed vegetables
1/2 tsp of olive oil per 10 lbs
Salt and garlic to taste
Supplements
The next most important thing is to supplement your pet’s diet.
The Omega 3 essential fatty acids should be added to EVERY pet’s diet; in fact, FATTY ACIDS ARE ESSENTIAL. Omega 3 fatty acids are great anti-inflammatories and have been shown to prevent the spread of cancer.
Flax is the best source for dogs. For cats, the liquid form is the only option, and they should receive it twice daily, in the form of Salmon oil or a supplement such as EFA Caps, which can be purchased from your veterinarian.
FLAVONOIDS. These are compounds in a class of their own. They compose the thousands of structures that give the bright color to fruits and vegetables. They are antioxidants as well as having anti-cancer properties. These include flavones, (apigenin), isoflavones (genistein), and flavanols (quercitin). Purchase a mixed bioflavoniod product that contains polyphenols, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin-gallate), which is the specific flavonoid isolated from green tea.
ANTIOXIDIZE. Antioxidants have been shown to slow the growth and spread of some types of cancer. Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium are the most effective ones.
Water
The fluoride and chlorine added in most urban water systems may play a roll in the increasing incidence of cancer. If possible, give your pet filtered water.
Vaccinations
Vaccines are often equated to visits from your mother-in-law.
You only want what is necessary for your pet. A limited vaccine program is highly recommended-and is especially important if your companion belongs to any of the breeds known to be more susceptible to cancer and chronic diseases.
In cats, vaccine associated sarcoma is a real risk. In dogs, the vaccines continually stimulate the immune system – in an older dog this may bring on undesirable effects and some researchers have wondered about the increased frequency of vaccines and increased incidence of cancer in pets.
The bottom line: only vaccinate your pet for diseases they are likely to get if not vaccinated, and only give the vaccine boosters as often as needed. As a generality, most pets can likely go without ANY vaccines past the age of 10.
Exercise
As with people, regular exercise will help prevent cancer.
It keeps the body weight lower, and causes the release of relaxing stress hormones, called endorphins.
Environmental Toxins
There are increasing bodies of evidence pointing toward the array of environmental toxins as causes of some cancers.
Avoid pesticides on your pet if possible. Avoid using toxic lawn care products, if possible, and try to clean your house with non-toxic cleaners.
As a society, we are exposed to more cancer causing products than we are even aware. A recent study showed the presence of over 75 environmental carcinogens in a group of “healthy” people.
There are many things that you can do to prevent Cancer. These changes will be good for both you and your pet.

Best Wishes,
Dr Andrew Jones, DVM
Hello Dr. Andrew,
I would first like to thank you for all the great information you give in your newsletters, they are great and I have tried many of them..I would love the free course, because I have been out of work for 2 years with a work related injury and desperately need your help. I rescued a English Bulldog in 2005…I had just lost my Pug due to pancreititus, you may could have saved him I’m sure, but he died within 1 weeks time of being diagnosed..Each day that I would come home I would miss him so bad, so in 3 weeks I found out about Gator. I said that really could not get another dog, but then I found out he was going to be put to sleep..I immediately said that I would take him..I not only saved his life, but he saved mine. My daughter had just got married and I was recently divorced..He was so pitiful that if you raised your voice he would go hide in the corner..He has come a long way, but is now suffering from a medical condition. At first the vet told me it was a parasite infection, he gave him antibiotics, but they didn’t help him. The vet also done several skin scrapes and still no answer, so he suggested to take him to a dermatologist, so I did..She said that it was thyroid condition and took blood and sent it to the Univ of Michigan. Well it came back fine..It took me several hours to get to the nearest derm. vet. So far the cost has been in the thousands and now that I have no job and not sure if I will be able to work again he still has the problem…Gator’s skin turned black and his hair started falling out. He then would get these crusty sores and it has progressively gotton worse and now he is getting the digital cyst on his front paws between his toes. My vet put him on thyroid medicine called Thyrosyn and still no help..It started on his rt side and is now moving to the other side, and has a bad odor. Please help me I can’t loose him, he is all I have..My house is in foreclosure and I don’t have anymore money..He has had a rough life and so have I please help us…
Thank You for your consideration
