Re: All you needed to know you learned in Kindergarten?

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Happy Friday loyal readers.

I am feeling a lot better after a night of sleep.

So what’s the deal about Kindergarten?

Well, there are some pretty basic Steps to Having
a Healthy Pet and Treating Disease…And you DON”T
NEED to Go to Veterinary School for 4 years to learn
them.

IN Fact, many of these same Principles of Keeping
YOU {!firstname} healthy, apply to your Dog or Cat.

And 50 years ago, when there WASN’T a PILL for EVERYTHING,
you had to use some VERY COMMON, SAFE and EFFECTIVE
At Home Remedies for a sudden health problem.

LIKE My Grandmother using Tea Bags on my Eyes
when I had an Eye Infection.

OR My Grandfather using an Essential Oil ( Tea Tree Oil)
on a cut wound.

Obviously there are different cultural beliefs around what
works. In the Movie, ‘A Big Fat Greek Wedding’ the father of
the bride has this belief that Windex was the Cure All for
Everything and sprayed it on every cut or scrape.. I am
not a Windex Healing Advocate 🙂

BUT let’s talk about the 2 emergency cases that I saw on
Wednesday Night.

Both are stabilized and doing MUCH BETTER now.

1. Diabetic Dog. Diabetes is a result of the Pancreas
not producing Insulin any more. This means that the
sugar in the blood CAN’T be used for Energy and you get
the resulting signs of Increased Drinking, Urinating,
Increased Appetite, Weakness, and some serious secondary
metabolic changes ( Keto-Acidosis)

If you are to have your pet diagnosed with Diabetes, Chances
are You will be told that there are NO ALTERNATE TREATMENTS
that you can consider.

BUT a Quick Perusal of Veterinary Secrets Revealed shows this:
DIETARY CHANGES. This is most important for cats. Recent studies
have shown that cats benefit greatly from higher protein, lower
carbohydrate diets. These resemble diets that they would eat
in the wild. Purina and Hills now make specific feline diabetic
diets. You can also purchase canned food that fits this requirement
at the grocery store. Specifically go for the kitten food: an example
is Friskies canned tuna which is very high in protein and low in
carbohydrates.

The other option is to make a home-made diet:

Home-made Diabetic Cat Food

80% poultry/egg
20% veggies
250mg calcium
1/2 Theragran or One-A-Day, (human vitamin/mineral tablets)
1/2-1 tsp flaxseed oil (or fish oil if the cat will accept it)
500mg taurine
For dogs, diet doesn’t seem to be as beneficial. It is best to feed a
balanced diet higher in fiber. The fiber takes longer to be digested,
producing a steady stream of sugar released into the blood.

TREADMILL. Regular exercise will decrease the amount of insulin needed.
It will also keep your pet trim. Remember, obese cats are much more
likely to develop diabetes.

VANADIUM. It appears to have insulin-like effects, lowering the insulin
needed for diabetics.

CHROMIUM. This supplement makes the cells more receptive to taking up
blood glucose (sugar). It may help to lower the dose of insulin.
ANTIOXIDANTS. Diabetes affects the other cells in the body, damaging tissue
and organ cells. Anti-oxidants limit this damage. Vitamin E and Vitamin C
are 2 common antioxidants
I would suggest.

FISH OIL. As a source of omega 3 fatty acids, fish oil may increase insulin
sensitivity.

HERBAL THERAPY. A number of herbs are used in diabetes. These include Gymnema,
Bitter Melon, Fenugreek, and Ginseng. These herbs can be found in specific
diabetic herbal combinations. Ginseng is the most effective of these herbs.
It has been shown to lower blood sugar in people, and is believed to do the
same in animals.

TOO MUCH INSULIN. In some cases your pet may decrease his insulin requirement,
resulting in insulin overdose. This usually happens within an hour of giving
the insulin injection. Your pet will be weak, trembling, dazed and may begin
to shake or seizure. If you suspect this, immediately give a sugar boost.
Have corn or maple syrup on hand and give 1-2 tablespoons. Rub it on the gums
if he can’t swallow, then take him to your veterinarian immediately.

2.  Hyperthyroid Cat.

In this case the owners had taken the cat off of ALL
treatment, and the kitty dropped down in weight to 5 lbs
( from 12) and had some organ damage.

This is a disease that occurs only in cats. Your cat will
usually be over the age of 10. She will have an increased
appetite, but will be losing weight. Her coat will be sparse.
She may be urinating more often. She will have evidence of
muscle loss. You may be able to feel an enlarged thyroid
gland beside her Adam’s apple. Her heart-rate will be
elevated (greater than 200beats per minute).

BUT once again MOST OWNERS are told that there
are NO ALTERNATE OPTIONS, except the Conventional Options.

Once Again, You could Open My Manual to the Chapter
on Hyperthyroid Disease, and Find these options which
are Surprisingly VERY EFFECTIVE.

SEE THE CAT DOC. If your older cat is showing some of these signs,
you should have your veterinarian perform blood tests to confirm
hyperthyroidism. In some pets they already have pre-existing kidney
disease, and in those cats we may not be able to treat. A simple
blood panel with a T4 test will confirm the disease.

RADIATE YOUR CAT. This sounds crazy, but it is the safest and most
effective way to treat your hyperthyroid cat. Your cat will be given
one dose of radioactive Iodine that selectively targets the abnormal
thyroid cells. It is very safe and effective, but can only be
performed at a few referral practitioners.

CARNITINE. This is a supplement that has been found to be effective
in reversing the signs of hyperthyroid disease in people.

BUGLEWEED (Lycopus europeus) and MELISSA (Melissa officinalis). These
are two herbs that have been used in combination to combat the effects
of hyperthyroid disease. Bugleweed has been shown to decrease thyroid
hormone levels in rats 24 hours after administration.
