Avocado Soybean Unsapponifiables
————————————

Avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) are a supplement of natural avocado and soybean oil extract.

It is unrealistic to eat enough avocados and soybeans to get enough oil to be beneficial- it needs to be the concentrated oil.

Scientific studies in people showed that patients who took a dose of 300 mg of avocado soybean unsaponifiables per day needed lower doses of anti-inflammatory medications (NSAID’S)

This has been used in France for over 15 years, with many patients claiming great results, and no side effects.

According to the studies, it takes over 60 days to see decreased pain and inflammation, it is not a quick response, but that is typical of many supplements.

As well there was pain relief for over 2 months after stopping the supplement.

Uses in Animals
————————-

Here is one study showing its use in dogs

Protective effects of total fraction of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables on the structural changes in experimental dog osteoarthritis: inhibition of nitric oxide synthase and matrix metalloproteinase-13

Conclusions

This study demonstrates that treatment with avocado/soybean unsaponifiables can reduce the development of early osteoarthritic cartilage and subchondral bone lesions in the anterior cruciate ligament dog model of osteoarthritis. This effect appears to be mediated through the inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase and MMP-13, which are key mediators of the structural changes that take place in osteoarthritis.

Doses
———————-

In the canine study the dose was 10mg/kg daily- so a 85lb dog would take 400mg a day.

Extrapolating the doses for people, the dose would be about 1/2 of a human dose- meaning the same 85lb dog would be taking 150mg a day.

Clearly more study is needed, but this seems to be a new promising supplement.

Best Wishes

Dr Andrew Jones

P.S. Many nutrients have been shown to be beneficial in decreasing the pain and inflammation of arthritis. Some of these include essential fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM.

    1. We agree that whole avocado isn’t something we’d recommend feeding in large amounts, and the pit is a definite no. But avocado soybean unsaponifiables are a concentrated extract of the oils, not simply feeding avocado and soybeans. There’s also some promising research in dogs for joint support.

  1. I thought avacados had a component called persin that was toxic to dogs?

The ASPCA maintains that they are dangerous for dogs. “Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as persin,” according to Dana Farbman, CVT, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. “The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic.”

“In addition, the ASPCA includes avocados on the list of people foods that are unsafe for pets, with this warning, “The leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Birds and rodents are especially sensitive to avocado poisoning, and can develop congestion, difficulty breathing and fluid accumulation around the heart. Some ingestions may even be fatal.”

    1. The important bit is that dogs appear to be much more resistant to persin than birds and some other animals. The bigger concerns with dogs are usually the high fat content, which can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis, and the pit, which can cause an obstruction. So we’re not saying dogs should eat a bowl of guacamole, but a little avocado flesh is quite different from eating the leaves or pit.

  2. I have also heard avocados were not good for dogs but, on the other hand, Avoderm dog food is based on avocados.

In this study avocado oil is being used so possibly the Persin has been separated & removed.

    1. The concern is mainly with persin and certain parts of the plant, while avocado oil and concentrated avocado soybean unsaponifiables are a different story.

  3. I’m getting mixed signals also. There was a post on avacodos being toxic to dogs not too long ago. I’m losing faith Dr Jones.

    1. The key distinction is between avocado itself and avocado soybean unsaponifiables, which are a concentrated extract of the oils. Avocado flesh also isn’t considered the same as feeding the skin, pit, or leaves.

    1. The key difference is that ASU is a concentrated extract of avocado and soybean oils, not feeding your dog avocado or soybeans. It’s a pretty interesting distinction, and the research on ASU for joint health is promising.

  4. I just got his Special Report on Dog Food and avocados are listed as something never to give dogs. And soy is definitely not good for dogs. Now he’s promoting advacados as a natural remedy for arthritis? No explanation of any kind? And on top of that two different dosages for an 85 lb. dog! They both can’t be right. I was thinking about getting his Canine Supplement, but now I wonder, can I trust it? What’s going on with Dr. Jones?

    1. Totally fair question. The key is that ASU is a concentrated avocado and soybean oil extract, not feeding dogs avocado or soybeans. The two doses came from different calculations, and we should have explained that more clearly. More research is still needed, too.

  5. Dr. Jones, I believe I learned from you in the past that avocados are toxic to dogs and soy is not a helpful, in fact is a harmful nutrient to dogs, whether it is organic or GM altered. This information has been reinforced by several holistic vet. sources that have helped my raise my dog to be healthy. Please clarify!

    1. The key distinction is ASU, avocado soybean unsaponifiables, which is a concentrated extract of avocado and soybean oils studied for joint health. Whole avocado and soy are a different matter. Avocado is not considered highly toxic to dogs, though the pit is a serious hazard, and soy is not inherently toxic either. We hope that clears it up!

  6. I have used Dr. Jones supplement for my Lab and Labradoodle for 5-6 years and I have never had healthier dogs and of course good food is a must also. I would like to find out where one could read more on this subject. Please do your dog or dogs a favor and give them the vitamins.

    Thanks

    Kay Miller

    1. We’re thrilled your pups are doing so well. Good food plus the right nutritional support can go a long way. You can read more about natural joint support and ASU in our article.

  7. So was any conclusion reached about avocado being safe to use despite being told that they are not?
This could be really dangerous if it’s not and this info is being disemminated.
