How Cannabinoids Can Help Treat Dog Skin Tumors Naturally

Could Your Dog’s Skin Lump Be More Than Just a Bump?

Skin tumors in dogs can be scary—but understanding them and knowing your options makes a huge difference. Mast Cell Tumors (MCTs) are one of the most common skin cancers in dogs, yet many can be managed effectively, sometimes without harsh medications. In this blog, I’ll guide you through what MCTs are, how to spot them, and both traditional and holistic options you can consider to support your pet’s health.

One option I’ve seen tremendous success with in my practice is using cannabinoids—not just CBD, but a full spectrum of compounds that work together naturally.

Support Your Pet Holistically with Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Cannabinoid Blend

Our Ultimate Cannabinoid Blend for Dogs and Cats is a full-spectrum, 100% organic, cold-pressed hemp oil supplement designed for pets. Available in three sizes—300mg, 900mg, and 1800mg—each bottle includes a medicinal-quality dropper for precise dosing.

Cannabinoids naturally interact with your pet’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS), helping regulate immune response, inflammation, pain, appetite, and mood. All components are non-psychoactive, yet provide a wide range of potential benefits:

  • CBD: supports joints and mobility, brain and nervous system health, immunity, and stress relief.

  • CBC: anti-inflammatory, pain-reducing, mood-supporting, and potentially tumor-inhibiting.

  • CBG: helps with inflammation, pain, anxiety, neuroprotection, bladder support, and antimicrobial action.

  • CBN: appetite stimulant, antibacterial, neuroprotective, and may reduce eye pressure.

Give your dog or cat the care they deserve—naturally and effectively.

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate Cannabinoid Blend is a complete blend of key cannabinoids including CBD, CBC, CBN and CBG, in 100% Organic Cold Pressed Hemp Oil. The supplement is a liquid, with 3 sizes available (all are the same concentration, just different size bottles): 300mg (5ml, 0.17 fl oz), 900mg (15ml, 0.5 fl oz) and 1800mg (30ml, 1 fl oz). The bottles include a medicinal quality dropper for very accurate dosage measurement.

Skin Tumors in Dogs: Top Holistic Options

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers I see in dogs. The good news is that most are benign—but not all. Knowing what to look for, and having options for treatment, including natural approaches, can make a huge difference for your dog’s health.

I’ve been seeing more dog parents exploring cannabinoids for these growths, both topically and orally, with some very encouraging results. And it’s not just CBD—cannabinoids like CBC, CBG, CBN, and even THC have anti-carcinogenic properties.

That’s why I’m excited to share our Natural, Whole Plant MULTI-Cannabinoid BLEND for Dogs and Cats:
Dr Jones’ ULTIMATE Cannabinoid Blend for Dogs and Cats – Mast Cell Tumors

Understanding Mast Cell Tumors (MCTs)

What Are Mast Cells?

Mast cells are part of the immune system and contain granules filled with inflammatory chemicals to fight off parasites. They have binding sites for a type of antibody called IgE. When IgE binds, it triggers the release of these inflammatory chemicals.

In allergies, mast cells can get “confused,” reacting to harmless proteins like dust mites, causing redness, swelling, itchiness, and other allergy symptoms.

What Are Mast Cell Tumors?

MCTs are skin cancers that arise from mast cells. While they normally protect your dog, these cells can go rogue and form tumors. Mast cell tumors are the most common skin tumors in dogs, making up 7–21% of all canine skin tumors.

Although they often affect the skin, MCTs can develop internally too. Some breeds are at higher risk, including:

  • Boxer

  • Rhodesian Ridgeback

  • Pug

  • Boston Terrier

  • Pit Bull Terrier

  • Weimaraner

  • Shar-Pei (earlier onset, often more aggressive)

Signs Your Dog Might Have an MCT

Watch for:

  • Skin Lumps or Bumps – Raised, firm, sometimes ulcerated lumps on or under the skin.

  • Redness & Swelling – Inflammation around the tumor site.

  • Bleeding & Ulceration – Tumor may break open, ooze, or crust.

  • Itching & Scratching – Dogs may lick or chew the area excessively.

  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms – Vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite from histamine release.

  • Behavior Changes – Lethargy, depression, or restlessness due to discomfort.

  • Spreading Tumors – Tumors may metastasize to lymph nodes, liver, or spleen.

Diagnosis

A needle aspirate can often confirm an MCT by examining cells under a microscope. For grading and prognosis, a tissue biopsy is necessary.

Mast Cell Tumor Grades:

  • Grade 1: Local growth, unlikely to spread; surgery is usually curative.

  • Grade 2: May or may not spread; surgery often curative.

  • Grade 3: Aggressive, invasive tumors; likely to spread to spleen, liver, or bone marrow.

Treatment Options

Traditional Treatments

  • Surgery: Ideal for Grade 1/2 tumors and often curative. Some Grade 1 tumors can be monitored and removed only if they grow.

  • Radiation & Chemotherapy: Used for more advanced cases.

Corticosteroids

Prednisolone or dexamethasone can be directly toxic to mast cells, offering temporary relief and remission. They’re inexpensive and worth trying before more aggressive chemotherapy.

Tigilanol Tiglate (Stelfonta®)

A newer treatment for tumors that cannot be surgically removed. It’s injected directly into the tumor, kills up to 80% of tumor cells, and promotes healing. Swelling, bruising, and open wounds are expected during the healing process.

Natural and Holistic Options

Here are some alternative options I often recommend:

  • Nettle & Quercetin: Natural antihistamines and anti-inflammatories.

    • Nettle: 100mg per 10lbs once daily

    • Quercetin: 50–100mg per 10lbs daily.

  • Licorice Root Extract: Acts as a natural corticosteroid.

    • ½ ml per 20lbs twice daily

  • Dandelion Root Extract: Traditionally used for MCTs.

    • 1 teaspoon per 10lbs daily (simmer in ½ cup water for 14 days)

  • Cannabinoids: CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC

  • Medicinal Mushrooms:

    • Chaga: Reduces mast cell degranulation

    • Turkey Tail: Supports cancer defense

    • Chaga Paste: Mix chaga tea, castor oil, and neem oil into a paste. Apply to tumor with gauze overnight; lasts 2–3 days in the fridge.

Heal Your Pet at Home

Most mast cell tumors are Grade 1 and can often be cured with surgery or managed with alternative remedies. Breeds at higher risk may need more aggressive monitoring and treatment.

If your dog has a lump or is arthritic, I encourage trying our NEW Cannabinoid Blend for Dogs and Cats. This whole plant extract contains all beneficial cannabinoids working together, carried in hemp seed oil for better absorption and effectiveness.
