The Hidden Risks of Over-Vaccination in Dogs and Cats

1. Too Many, Too Often

Did you know your dog could be getting 6 to 7 vaccines every year? That’s including routine boosters and non-core vaccines. This overload of vaccines can stress your pet’s immune system and increase the likelihood of adverse reactions.

2. Are All Vaccines Effective?

Not all vaccines are as effective as we think. For example:

• Lyme Disease Vaccine (Dogs): There’s limited evidence that this vaccine is effective, especially in areas with low Lyme disease risk.

• FIV/FeLV Vaccines (Cats): These vaccines are often given annually, but for indoor or low-risk cats, they may cause more harm than benefit.

3. Long-Lasting Immunity Is Real

It’s well-documented that many core vaccines offer long-lasting protection:

  • If your dog has sufficient immunity, no further vaccines are needed.

For Cats:

Outdoor Cats:

• 8 Weeks: FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)

• 12 Weeks: FVRCP (booster)

• 6 Months: Rabies Vaccine

• 1 Year Later: Do titer testing

  • If your cat is immune, no more boosters are needed.

Indoor Cats:

• No vaccines are necessary unless there’s a compelling, risk-based reason. I don’t vaccinate my own indoor cat, and I recommend the same for other cat owners.
