National Vaccine Month: Beware of the Hidden Risks
Every August, National Vaccine Month rolls around, prompting many pet owners to reconsider the health of their furry companions. Should you vaccinate your dog or cat, or is it time to rethink their shots? There’s no doubt that vaccines play a critical role in protecting pets from serious diseases, but over-vaccination is becoming an increasingly concerning issue.
As a former holistic veterinarian, I’ve seen firsthand how over-vaccination can lead to chronic health issues in pets. While vaccines certainly have their place in pet health, the growing evidence suggests that less can often be more. This month, I want to share the hidden risks of over-vaccination and discuss my recommended vaccine protocol that ensures minimal, safe, and effective immunization tailored to your pet’s lifestyle.
The Hidden Risks of Over-Vaccination in Dogs and Cats
1. Too Many, Too Often
Did you know your dog could be getting 6 to 7 vaccines every year? That’s including routine boosters and non-core vaccines. This overload of vaccines can stress your pet’s immune system and increase the likelihood of adverse reactions.
2. Are All Vaccines Effective?
Not all vaccines are as effective as we think. For example:
-
Lyme Disease Vaccine (Dogs): There’s limited evidence that this vaccine is effective, especially in areas with low Lyme disease risk.
-
FIV/FeLV Vaccines (Cats): These vaccines are often given annually, but for indoor or low-risk cats, they may cause more harm than benefit.
3. Long-Lasting Immunity Is Real
It’s well-documented that many core vaccines offer long-lasting protection:
-
Canine Parvovirus Vaccine: Studies show this vaccine lasts up to 7 years, yet it’s still given every 3 years. Why continue vaccinating if your pet is already protected?
4. One Size Does NOT Fit All
A 5-pound Chihuahua and a 150-pound Great Dane receive the same vaccine dose. This doesn’t make sense. Smaller dogs may suffer more severe side effects due to their size and the relative volume of the vaccine. Shouldn’t we tailor vaccine doses and schedules to each individual pet?
5. The Real Risks of Side Effects
Though rare, vaccine reactions do happen. In dogs, side effects can include:
-
Chronic skin issues
-
Autoimmune diseases
-
Digestive problems
In cats, there is a small but real risk of vaccine-site sarcomas (cancer at the injection site).
My Recommended Vaccine Protocol
Here’s the minimal vaccine protocol I recommend, based on the latest research and holistic principles.
For Dogs:
-
8 Weeks: Canine Distemper + Parvovirus
-
12 Weeks: Canine Distemper + Parvovirus (booster)
-
6 Months: Rabies Vaccine
-
1 Year Later: Do titer testing to check immunity status
-
If your dog has sufficient immunity, no further vaccines are needed.
-
For Cats:
Outdoor Cats:
-
8 Weeks: FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)
-
12 Weeks: FVRCP (booster)
-
6 Months: Rabies Vaccine
-
1 Year Later: Do titer testing
-
If your cat is immune, no more boosters are needed.
-
Indoor Cats:
-
No vaccines are necessary unless there’s a compelling, risk-based reason. I don’t vaccinate my own indoor cat, and I recommend the same for other cat owners.
What’s the Solution?
The key is a thoughtful, minimal vaccination strategy:
-
Focus on core vaccines only
-
Space them out—don’t administer all at once
-
Use titer testing to assess true immunity levels
-
Tailor the schedule based on your pet’s individual risk, size, age, and environment
Vaccination isn’t about checking off boxes on a form—it’s about doing what’s best for your pet’s health.
