How Cannabis Helped My Pets: A Personal Journey of Pain Relief and Immune Support

Lola, a Golden Retriever, had mouth cancer that spread to her lungs. It reminded me of my previous dog, Lewis, who suffered from a similar condition. Despite various veterinary treatments, nothing seemed to help him. He was in pain, and even fentanyl didn’t provide relief.

Lola’s Journey: A Remarkable Battle with Cancer

In February 2023, Lola, a 9-year-old golden retriever, was diagnosed with oral melanoma – an aggressive cancer that had already spread to her lungs. Her veterinarian gave the heartbreaking news to her owner, Allison Roth, that Lola likely had less than six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, Lola’s journey was far from over.

Seeking the Best Care at UC Davis

Lola was referred to the Oncology Service at UC Davis William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, one of the largest and most comprehensive cancer treatment centers in veterinary medicine. UC Davis collaborates with the School of Medicine and School of Veterinary Medicine to discover new treatments for diseases like cancer, which affect both dogs and humans.

Allison Roth shared her personal connection with the hospital:

“When Lola was a puppy, I was treated for a brain tumor at the Mayo Clinic. Through my multiple brain surgeries, she was always by my side. When it came time for her cancer treatments, I was thrilled that she would be treated at UC Davis – what I would call the ‘Mayo Clinic for dogs.’"

The Treatment Decision

At UC Davis, Roth was presented with two options for Lola’s treatment. The first was palliative radiation therapy, which could potentially give Lola more time. The second option was participation in a clinical trial studying groundbreaking immunotherapy. After careful consideration, Roth chose to enroll Lola in the trial.

The study, titled “Intravenous Doxorubicin and Inhaled IL-15 Immunotherapy for Treatment of Lung Metastases,” was an exciting development in cancer treatment. It involved inhaling cancer-fighting drugs as part of an ongoing series of immunotherapy trials. Lola’s condition appeared promising at first, but x-rays taken before and after the trial revealed that the treatment wasn’t showing the expected results.

Setbacks and the Turnaround

Unfortunately, Lola’s initial response to the chemotherapy and immunotherapy was not as hoped. X-rays showed more tumor growth in her lungs, and she had to exit the clinical trial early. The next step was palliative radiation therapy, which involved six sessions of radiation over three weeks in May and June 2023.

Despite the radiation shrinking the tumor in her mouth completely, another x-ray showed continued growth in her lungs. It seemed like Lola’s cancer battle was nearing its end. But to everyone’s surprise, Lola defied expectations.

A Miraculous Recovery

By September 2023, Lola underwent another round of x-rays. This time, all her tumors were gone. No one could believe it. What had happened? It turns out that Lola had experienced a phenomenon known as “pseudoprogression,” where immunotherapies can cause temporary inflammation in tumors, making them appear larger before they shrink.

In Lola’s case, the delayed response to the IL-15 trial resulted in a complete remission of her tumors. Now, almost two years later, Lola appears to be cancer-free, and her regular check-ups at UC Davis show no signs of recurrence.

Allison Roth expressed her overwhelming gratitude:

“I don’t know how to express how grateful we are for allowing Lola to be in the trial and for all the care she’s received at UC Davis.”

Lola’s case is a testament to the power of exploring all available treatment options and staying hopeful even when the situation seems dire. It’s a reminder that modern veterinary care, combined with alternative therapies, can sometimes lead to extraordinary results.
