How to Treat Pseudomonas Ear Infections in Dogs: A Holistic Approach

I see many dogs coming through my clinic with recurring ear infections, especially those caused by a particularly troublesome bacteria called Pseudomonas. This bacteria is notoriously difficult to treat, as it resists most common antibiotics. If you’re dealing with a dog that has chronic ear infections, there’s a good chance it could be caused by Pseudomonas. Here’s what you need to know and, most importantly, how you can treat it at home with natural remedies.

What is Pseudomonas Otitis?

Pseudomonas is a common bacteria that normally resides in the ear, but under certain conditions, it can turn into a persistent and painful ear infection. These conditions often include an underlying allergy or a narrowed ear canal (known as stenosis). Unfortunately, the infection can become almost impossible to treat due to its resistance to most antibiotics.

Some signs of Pseudomonas otitis (ear infection) include:

  • Severe head shaking or ear scratching

  • A strong, foul-smelling odor from the ear

  • Pus-like discharge from the ear

  • Intense swelling and pain within the ear canal

  • Possibly, ulceration or middle ear infections (otitis media)

Diagnosing Pseudomonas Otitis

Diagnosing Pseudomonas otitis can be tricky. A swab of the ear and possibly a culture sensitivity test might be needed. However, based on what I see in my practice, we often have a pretty good guess just from the clinical signs.

How to Treat Pseudomonas Ear Infections Naturally

While Pseudomonas is difficult to treat, there are three key principles that can help manage and alleviate this infection:

  1. Clean the ear thoroughly: Proper cleaning is essential to remove any debris or bacterial buildup that could block the action of topical treatments.

  2. Use effective antibacterial treatments: I’ll explain which natural remedies work.

  3. Address the inflammation: Narrowed ear canals need special attention to reduce swelling and prevent future infections.

Step 1: Clean the Ear Properly

A clean ear is the first step in treating any ear infection, especially one caused by Pseudomonas. If you don’t clean the ear properly, the infection can return. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Remove the source of reinfection: You need to clear away all debris to prevent re-contamination.

  2. Remove bacterial buildup: This allows the treatment to penetrate effectively. With Pseudomonas, most antibiotics struggle to get through the bacteria’s tough outer wall, so a thorough cleaning is crucial.

In severe cases, dogs with deep ear infections may need anesthesia for a thorough cleaning, but I hope your dog isn’t at that stage.

Step 2: Make Your Own Natural Ear Cleaner

To clean your dog’s ear, I recommend using a natural ear cleanser. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Green tea: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, green tea is soothing and antibacterial.

  • Apple cider vinegar (ACV): This is the star ingredient for fighting Pseudomonas due to its antibacterial properties.

  • Castile soap: A mild cleanser to help remove debris.

  • Aloe: Known for soothing inflammation.

  • Witch hazel: Helps dry up excess moisture in the ear.

Homemade Ear Cleaner Recipe:

  • 1 cup of green tea (cooled)

  • 2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon of Castile soap

  • 2 tablespoons of aloe vera

  • 1 teaspoon of witch hazel

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together.

  2. Fill a 10cc syringe with the mixture.

  3. Tilt your dog’s head back and gently pour the mixture into the ear canal, filling it completely.

  4. Massage the base of the ear for 60 seconds to ensure the solution reaches all areas.

  5. Let your dog shake their head to expel the liquid.

  6. Use gauze or cotton balls to clean out any debris.

Do this once a day for 14 days to ensure the ear is properly cleaned.

Step 3: Apply Topical Apple Cider Vinegar

After cleaning, apply a more concentrated mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. This can help kill off the Pseudomonas bacteria lingering in the ear.

  1. Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water (50% dilution).

  2. Draw the solution into a syringe and apply 5-10 drops to the base of the ear.

  3. Gently rub the base of the ear to ensure it’s well-distributed.

  4. Repeat this 2-4 times a day for 14 days.

Step 4: Use Oral Natural Antibacterial Supplements

In addition to topical treatments, I recommend using propolis (a natural antibacterial compound) to help support your dog’s immune system. Though studies on its efficacy against Pseudomonas are limited, it’s a good alternative when conventional antibiotics aren’t effective.

  • Dosage: 100 mg per 10 pounds of body weight, twice daily, for 14-21 days.

Step 5: Reduce Ear Canal Inflammation

To prevent the narrowing of the ear canal that can lead to recurring infections, you can use natural anti-inflammatory treatments like CBD oil or licorice root extract.

  • CBD oil: 3 mg per 10 pounds of body weight, twice daily.

  • Licorice root extract: 1/4 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, twice daily.

Both can help reduce inflammation in the ear and improve airflow, reducing the chances of a recurring infection.

Step 6: Optional: Use Hydrocortisone

For cases where the ear canal is particularly narrow, you can use 1% hydrocortisone topically. This can help reduce inflammation and open up the ear canal, making it easier for treatments to penetrate.

Final Thoughts

If your dog is suffering from chronic, foul-smelling ear infections, it may very well be caused by Pseudomonas. Thankfully, with the steps I’ve outlined, you can take matters into your own hands and help your dog feel better without needing costly veterinary treatments or antibiotics.

By cleaning the ear thoroughly, applying natural antibacterial treatments, and addressing inflammation, you can make a real difference in your dog’s ear health. Just remember, consistency is key. If you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to consult your vet.
