Top 5 Natural Recipes to Help Heal Pet Cancer
As a veterinarian, I often say, “You are what you eat," and when it comes to cancer, that saying holds true for our pets as well.
Can Diet Really Influence Cancer in Dogs and Cats?
Yes, it certainly can! What we feed our pets plays a significant role in their overall health, including cancer prevention and management. While many of us, myself included, may rely on conventional pet food, there are some easy additions you can make to dramatically improve your pet’s diet and health.
Essential Fatty Acids: A Powerful Nutrient
One of the most studied nutrients for cancer prevention is essential fatty acids, which are so beneficial they are considered “pharmaconutrients." These essential fatty acids can have a tremendous impact on your pet’s health. That’s why I highly recommend supplementing with our best-selling All-Natural Krill Oil supplement.

Dr. Jones’ Homemade Cancer Diets for Dogs and Cats
When it comes to feeding your dog or cat with cancer, I understand the concern that the diet might not be “nutritionally balanced." However, most homemade diets are FAR BETTER than most kibble, even if they aren’t 100% balanced.
The focus of a cancer diet is simple: Cancer cells thrive on carbohydrates and simple sugars. So, we are ELIMINATING CARBOHYDRATES.
Key Points for Homemade Dog Cancer Diets
-
Protein: Focus on high-quality, balanced amino acid profiles from lean beef, chicken, turkey, or eggs. These diets should be HIGH protein and HIGH fat.
-
Fats: Add a nutritious fat. For cancer, I prefer coconut oil, which is a good source of MCT oil.
-
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These are critical and should come from krill, fish, or flax oil. Elevated amounts are needed for cancer. I recommend krill oil as it’s the most nutrient-dense, with an excellent EPA/DHA profile, the antioxidant Astaxanthin, and high levels of Vitamin D.
-
Calcium: Since bones aren’t being consumed, calcium is essential. My preferred source is eggshells—dry them, roast for 10 minutes, and grind them in a coffee grinder. You can also use OTC calcium carbonate supplements.
-
Vitamins and Minerals:
- Vitamin D is in egg yolks and red meat, as well as in moderate levels in krill or fish oil.
- Vitamin E is in krill, sunflower, and coconut oils.
- Iron comes from animal protein and spinach/kale.
- Zinc from red meat and flax seeds.
- Copper from spinach.
- Iodine from egg yolks.
-
Fiber: Veggies like spinach and kale are excellent fiber sources, but I particularly recommend ground flax as the healthiest option.
Ground Turkey Cancer Diet for Dogs (50 lb Dog)
- Ground Lean Turkey: 2 lbs, cooked.
- Carrots: ½ cup, steamed.
- Eggs: 2, cooked and scrambled with the turkey—great protein source, and the yolks are rich in Vitamin E and Iodine.
- Coconut Oil: 2 tablespoons, added after cooking.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acid (Krill Oil): 500 mg per 10 lbs of body weight.
- Calcium Supplement: Ground eggshell (½ tsp or 1000 mg) or 2 calcium tablets (Tums).
- Adult Multivitamin-Mineral Supplement: 1 tablet or 1 scoop of Ultimate Canine.
Key Points for Homemade Cat Cancer Diets
For cats, the focus is similar but more specialized:
-
Protein: Animal protein like chicken, turkey, and duck should be the main focus.
-
No Carbohydrates: Cats do not need carbs, so avoid kibble entirely.
-
Fats: Add balanced, healthy fats like coconut oil (a source of MCT oil) for cancer diets.
-
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Use krill or fish oil as supplements.
-
Calcium: Since bones aren’t being consumed, calcium is crucial. I prefer ground eggshells, but you can also use OTC calcium carbonate.
-
Vitamins and Minerals:
- Vitamin D is found in egg yolks and krill/fish oil.
- Vitamin E is in coconut oil.
- Iron is found in animal proteins.
- Zinc is in meat and flax seeds.
- Taurine (essential for cats) must be added to any homemade recipe.
- Fiber: Ground flax or canned pumpkin is an excellent fiber source for cats.
Ground Turkey Cancer Diet for Cats (10 lb Cat)
- Ground Turkey: 1 lb, cooked.
- Egg: 1, optional.
- Coconut Oil: 1 tablespoon.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acid (Krill Oil): 1000 mg.
- Morton’s Lite Salt: ¼ tsp.
- Iodinated Salt: ¼ tsp.
- Calcium Carbonate: 1000 mg (2 Tums tablets) or ½ tsp of ground eggshell.
- Adult Multivitamin-Mineral Supplement: ¼ tablet or 1 scoop of Ultimate Feline.
- Taurine: ¼ tsp powder or 1 – 500 mg tablet.
Final Thoughts
Don’t get too caught up in the idea that your pet’s diet needs to be perfectly “nutritionally balanced.” Think about how we eat—apply that simple logic to feeding your pets.
When helping a pet with cancer, there are many factors to consider, but modifying their diet is one of the simplest ways to slow down the progression of the disease. Homemade diets are almost always a healthier option than conventional kibble.
Most importantly, make sure your dog or cat is eating. Use what they like—many dogs and cats love the taste of krill oil, and it can help with disease prevention too.
