DIY SKUNK-SMELL Repellent with 4 Easy Ingredients for Your Pets

My Encounter with Skunk Spray: A Guide for Pet Owners

Recently, my dog had an unfortunate run-in with a skunk. If you’re a pet owner facing this smelly situation, I’m here to share some effective home remedies, as well as insight into what works and what doesn’t. For those interested in natural pet health and wellness, you’ve come to the right place. Don’t forget to subscribe to Veterinary Secrets for more tips.

Where I live, the skunk population has skyrocketed, leading to increased encounters between these creatures and our pets. Skunk spray is not just unpleasant—it’s potent and can be quite harmful. It contains thioacetates and thiols, which produce a strong, oily, and overwhelming odor. When thioacetates come into contact with water, they convert to thiols, reigniting that pungent smell. This can be particularly troubling if your pet gets wet weeks after the incident, bringing back the strong skunk odor.

Immediate Steps to Take

If your dog gets sprayed by a skunk, especially in sensitive areas like the eyes or mouth, it’s crucial to act fast. Skunk spray can cause pain, redness, and even corneal ulceration. It can irritate the respiratory tract if inhaled, leading to coughing and breathing difficulties. Ingesting it might cause nausea, vomiting, drooling, and in rare cases, anemia.

Here’s what happened when a skunk sprayed my poodle at night. I had no commercial skunk odor remover on hand, so I had to think quickly. First, if the spray hits your dog’s eyes or mouth, flush these areas with cool, running water. Avoid using soap or other detergents initially—just focus on flushing out the skunk oil.

DIY Skunk Odor Remover Recipe

In case you find yourself without a commercial product, here’s a DIY remedy that really works. You’ll need:

  • 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Lavender essential oil

Combine 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup of baking soda, and 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap in an open container (the mixture will fizz). Add a few drops of lavender essential oil for a pleasant scent. Apply this mixture immediately to your pet, avoiding the eyes.

Wear gloves and old clothes you don’t mind getting smelly. Work the solution into your dog’s coat with gloved hands, leave it on for about 5 minutes, and then thoroughly rinse it off. Follow up with a pet-appropriate shampoo, like Dr. Jones’s Complete 3-in-1 Pet Wash.

Aftercare and Prevention

The night my poodle was sprayed, I mixed and applied this homemade remedy. I was amazed at how effective it was. She smelled wonderful afterward—no trace of skunk odor!
